If you love creating homemade beauty products, kombucha and SCOBYs are excellent ingredients to incorporate into your routine. Kombucha’s natural acidity makes it great for toning, while SCOBYs offer exfoliation and hydration benefits. Plus, it’s a perfect way to use up those extra SCOBYs that tend to accumulate during your brewing process.

Kombucha SCOBY Face Mask

You can keep it simple by placing a whole SCOBY directly on your face or blend it into a smoother texture for a DIY face mask. Here’s a flexible recipe where you can mix and match ingredients based on your skin’s needs and what you have in your kitchen. You don’t need exact measurements; just eyeball the ingredients to create a mixture that suits your preference.

Ingredients:

  • Kombucha SCOBY (plus a little kombucha liquid)
  • Toning and clarifying properties
  • Honey
  • Moisturising, brightening and anti-inflammatory benefits
  • Orange Blossom or Rose Water
  • Toning and calming effects with a lovely scent
  • Activated Charcoal
  • Detoxifies and deeply cleanses the skin
  • Green Tea
  • Soothes inflammation and helps with skin clarity.
  • Granulated Sugar or Brown Sugar
  • Gentle exfoliation for smooth skin
  • Coffee Grounds
  • Brightens and exfoliates for a healthy glow

Instructions:

  1. Puree the SCOBY and other ingredients until you achieve a smooth, even texture. Adjust the consistency by adding more or less liquid, depending on how thick you want it.
  2. Apply the mask while soaking in the tub to avoid a mess, as it can be quite runny
  3. Leave on for 10-15 minutes, then rinse off.
  4. Follow up with your favourite moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated.

Kombucha SCOBY Body Scrub

This exfoliating body scrub is perfect for giving your skin a smooth, polished feel. To create a scrub, use a similar base as the face mask but with a higher ratio of exfoliating ingredients.

Ingredients:

  • Kombucha SCOBY (pureed)
  • Granulated Sugar or Coffee Grounds
  • Helps exfoliate and brighten
  • Coconut Oil or Cocoa Butter
  • Adds moisture and makes the scrub more emollient

Instructions:

  1. Puree the SCOBY with the sugar or coffee grounds
  2. Add coconut oil or cocoa butter for a smooth, spreadable texture
  3. Gently massage into your skin in the shower, focusing on rough areas like elbows and knees
  4. Rinse thoroughly

Kombucha Toner

Kombucha makes a refreshing, natural toner. Its slight acidity helps balance the skin’s pH without being too harsh.

Ingredients:

  • Unflavoured Kombucha
  • Rose Water or Orange Blossom Water (optional)
  • Adds a soothing, aromatic touch.

Instructions:

  1. Mix equal parts kombucha and rose water or orange blossom water
  2. Pour the mixture into a small spray bottle
  3. Keep it refrigerated for a cool, refreshing toner spray
  4. Spritz onto your face after cleansing for a quick refresh

Note: Everyone’s skin is different, so it’s important to patch test and adjust the ingredients to suit your skin type. Enjoy experimenting with these homemade kombucha beauty products, and feel free to get creative with your own additions!
